travelling throughout eastern europe and, in particular, the czech and slovak republics, i witnessed the use of a drug i had previously been completely unaware of called pervitin.

a meth-amphetamine, it is something like the bastard child of crystal meth and ketamine, in both its dubious quality and effects. i stole the word and changed its spelling to give myself a working title, and a double entendre, for these portraits of teens covering the four seasons of one year - the year 2000.

whether as dealers, users, prostitutes or thieves - or a combination of all four - this drug was, or still is, a major part of their daily existence.

i know this situation is not unique and is probably repeated in some form in every major city in the world today. nevertheless, i would like to acknowledge and celebrate these teens for their warmth, humour, style and attitude . . .
